"body": "The air brake system on a semi truck and trailer uses compressed air, not hydraulic fluid, to apply the brakes. Air is stored, routed to each wheel end, and turned into mechanical force by a brake chamber. This page is the map of the system. Each part links to a page that goes deeper.\n\n## How the system fits together\n\nIt helps to think of the system in three stages.\n\n1. **Supply.** The air compressor builds pressure. The governor controls when it builds, the air dryer removes moisture, and the reservoirs store the air. This is also where the tractor and trailer connect: air lines run between them through the gladhand couplings.\n2. **Control.** When the driver presses the brake pedal, the treadle valve meters air toward the brakes. Relay and quick-release valves speed up applying and releasing, so the brakes at the back of a long combination do not lag behind the front.\n3. **Foundation brakes.** At each wheel end, a **brake chamber** converts air pressure into pushrod movement. A **slack adjuster** turns that movement into rotation of the brake camshaft, or the disc brake's actuating mechanism, and the lining presses on the drum or rotor.\n\nTwo more pieces sit on top of that:\n\n- **Spring brakes.** The parking and emergency brakes use a large spring in the rear section of a spring brake chamber, held back by air pressure. When air is lost, the spring applies the brake.\n- **Antilock brakes (ABS).** Wheel speed sensors and a controller modulate the brake pressure to keep a wheel from locking. A warning lamp tells the driver when the system detects a fault.\n\n## What each page covers\n\n- [Semi truck brake inspection](/kb/semi-truck-brake-inspection): what a brake inspection looks at, across the whole system, and how a maintenance visit differs from the federal annual inspection.\n- [Trailer ABS light](/kb/trailer-abs-light): what the lamp means, why it stays on, and what the rule says about trailer ABS lamps.\n- [Slack adjuster adjustment](/kb/slack-adjuster-adjustment): what automatic slack adjusters do, why a brake out of adjustment is a symptom, and where the brake adjustment rules sit.\n- [Brake chamber air leaks and replacement](/kb/brake-chamber-air-leaks): where air leaks show up in chambers, hoses and fittings, and what the rules say about brake hoses and about keeping parts in safe operating condition.\n- [Semi truck preventive maintenance checklist](/kb/semi-truck-preventive-maintenance-checklist): how a full PM visit is grouped by system.\n\n## Before you work on air brakes\n\nCompressed air and spring brakes both store energy. A brake that looks released can still hold a loaded spring, and a line that looks empty can still hold pressure. Follow the manufacturer's service documentation for the specific component, and use the safe-work steps it calls for before loosening anything.\n\n## Log the work in Blue Collar Parts\n\nA technician who works on a unit's brakes can log the work in Blue Collar Parts and send the record to their customer, who confirms it. [Learn what Blue Collar Parts is](/kb/what-is-blue-collar-parts).\n\n---\n\n*This page describes how air brake systems work in general terms. It is not a service manual and does not establish regulatory compliance. Use the equipment manufacturer’s current service documentation for equipment-specific procedures.*",
