# Cummins X15 Oil Capacity

**Cummins gives the X15's typical oil change capacity, pan and filter, as 36.3 liters (9.6 gal) low and 43.8 liters (11.6 gal) max.** That figure comes from the quick reference guide for 2020 and 2021 X15 efficiency hardware. Confirm it for the specific engine before filling.

## The figure and where it comes from

Cummins' *Quick Reference Guide: Truck maintenance and operation, 2020 and 2021 X15 efficiency hardware* (Bulletin 5600512, Rev. 10/24) states:

- "Typical oil change capacity (pan and filter)": "Low 36.3 liters (9.6 gal)" and "Max 43.8 liters (11.6 gal)";
- in its maintenance notes: "Typical oil change volume: 36.3–43.8 liters (9.6–11.6 gal)."

Cummins publishes the guide at [mart.cummins.com](https://mart.cummins.com/imagelibrary/data/assetfiles/0064269.pdf). It covers 2020 and 2021 X15 efficiency hardware. An X15 of another model year or build has its own documentation.

## How often is the oil changed on an X15?

The same guide sets the oil drain interval by duty cycle, measured in fuel economy:

- Severe (3–4.9 mpg): 25,000 miles / 12 months
- Short haul (5–5.9 mpg): 50,000 miles / 12 months
- Normal (6–6.9 mpg): 60,000 miles / 12 months
- Light (7+ mpg): 75,000 miles / 12 months

Across the same row the guide gives "500 hours for vocational applications." It also attaches other conditions to these figures. An extreme severe duty cycle (under 3 mpg) has a shorter interval, and some extensions depend on the oil, the filter or Cummins' OilGuard program. Read those notes in the guide before setting an interval.

## When is the X15 overhead adjusted?

The guide lists **overhead adjustment** at "500,000 miles / 10,000 hours / 60 months". It gives no clearance value. The adjustment procedure and settings are in Cummins' service documentation for the engine.

## Confirm it for your engine

For full maintenance detail, the guide refers to the *X15 CM2450 X124B Owner's Manual* (Bulletin 5504581) and *Operation and Maintenance Manual* (Bulletin 5504582). Both are available through [Cummins QuickServe](https://quickserve.cummins.com) or a Cummins dealer. Confirm the capacity and intervals for the engine's serial number and build there.

## What should the service record show?

An X15 oil service record should show:

- the date and the mileage or hours;
- the oil grade and the quantity added;
- the filter part numbers;
- the duty cycle the interval was based on;
- the condition of the oil and filter that came out;
- any oil analysis result from the visit (see [what a diesel oil analysis tells you](/kb/diesel-engine-pm-heavy-trucks)).

## Log the oil service in Blue Collar Parts

The truck PM form's **Engine Oil & Filter** section records the service and what was found, and the finished visit becomes the record your customer receives.
