"body": "A diesel generator preventive maintenance (PM) checklist organizes the service by system, so nothing on the unit is skipped and the visit can be recorded in a consistent order. The specific items and service intervals come from the engine and generator manufacturer's documentation, not from a generic checklist. For the general idea, read [what a preventive maintenance inspection is](/kb/what-is-a-pm-inspection).\n\n**Keep this checklist as a free form in Blue Collar Parts.** The diesel generator PM form covers the same seven areas, and filling it out on your phone costs nothing. Adding your customer and the unit is free, and so is recording each visit. You pay once, only when you send a record to your customer.\n\n## What a diesel generator PM covers\n\nA PM for a diesel generator set is usually grouped into seven areas:\n\n1. **Engine oil and filter.** Oil condition is one of the clearest signs of how the engine is being run and maintained.\n2. **Fuel system and day tank.** Fuel can sit for long stretches in a standby unit. Fuel quality, contamination, and the condition of the tank all affect whether the engine starts and keeps running.\n3. **Engine coolant and cooling system.** Coolant protects the engine against corrosion and, in outdoor installations, against freezing. The cooling system is checked so the unit can carry load without overheating.\n4. **Air intake and exhaust system.** The engine needs clean air in and a sound exhaust path out. A restricted intake or a damaged exhaust hurts performance and is easy to miss between visits.\n5. **Battery and charging system.** A generator that cannot crank is not a backup. Battery condition and charging output decide whether the unit starts when called on.\n6. **Load-bank exercise record and operating maintenance.** Backup units may go long periods without real load. This section keeps a record of exercise and testing so the history of how the unit has been run is on file.\n7. **Electrical system and controls.** Automatic start and stop controls, emergency shutdown systems, and the interface to the rest of the installation all have to work together when the unit is needed.\n\nWhich checks fall under each area, how often they are done, and what is acceptable all depend on the manufacturer's documentation for that particular unit.\n\n## Why keep a generator maintenance log\n\nStandby generators run rarely, so a unit can go months with little change on the hour meter. That makes the written record more important than memory. A generator maintenance log is a dated history of each service: what was looked at, what was done, and what was recommended next. It is how the next technician knows the unit's condition without starting from scratch, and how the customer can see what has been done on equipment they may not think about until it is needed.\n\n## What your customer should receive\n\nThe log is most useful when the customer gets a copy after each visit. Read [what belongs in a PM report for the customer](/kb/what-belongs-in-a-pm-report-for-the-customer) for what that record should contain.\n\n## Log the PM in Blue Collar Parts\n\nRecord each visit area by area in the app and mark the work complete. Then send the record to your customer: a dated page they can open, read and keep, and confirm. Recording costs nothing; you pay when you send. See [how to record a PM service](/kb/record-a-pm-service).\n\n---\n\n*Preventive maintenance is not a federal annual inspection and does not establish regulatory compliance. Use the equipment manufacturer’s current service documentation for equipment-specific maintenance requirements.*",
