"body": "A semi truck brake inspection is a look at every part of the [air brake system](/kb/air-brake-system) that has to work for the truck or trailer to stop and to stay parked. It is one of the largest parts of both a preventive maintenance visit and the federal annual inspection, and the two are different things.\n\n## What a brake inspection looks at\n\nA thorough brake inspection works through the system in order.\n\n1. **Air supply.** Compressor output, the governor, the air dryer and the reservoirs, including whether moisture is building up in the system.\n2. **Lines, hoses and fittings.** Air lines and hoses for chafing, kinking, damage, and leaks at the connections. See [brake chamber air leaks and hoses](/kb/brake-chamber-air-leaks).\n3. **Brake chambers.** Service and spring brake chambers for damage, loose mounting, and air escaping at the chamber.\n4. **Brake adjustment.** Whether each brake is holding its adjustment, and whether the automatic slack adjusters are doing their job. See [slack adjuster adjustment](/kb/slack-adjuster-adjustment).\n5. **Foundation brakes.** Linings or pads, drums or rotors, and the wheel-end hardware.\n6. **Antilock brakes.** Whether the ABS warning lamps behave as expected. See the [trailer ABS light](/kb/trailer-abs-light).\n7. **Parking and emergency brakes.** Whether the spring brakes apply and release as they should.\n\nA maintenance visit records what the technician saw at each point, what was done, and what needs follow-up.\n\n## Maintenance visit or annual inspection\n\nThe same parts can be looked at for two different reasons.\n\n- A **preventive maintenance visit** is scheduled work. Its purpose is to catch wear early and keep the unit working. Read [what a PM inspection is](/kb/what-is-a-pm-inspection).\n- A **federal annual inspection** is a regulatory event with its own pass or fail standard. The standard for brakes is in Appendix A to 49 CFR Part 396. This page does not restate it. See [Appendix A inspection standards](/kb/appendix-a-inspection-standards) for the standard and its measurements.\n\nA passing maintenance visit says nothing about the annual inspection, and a failed maintenance item is a maintenance alert, not an out-of-service determination. [PM inspection vs. DOT inspection](/kb/pm-inspection-vs-dot-inspection) explains the boundary.\n\n## Use the manufacturer's documentation\n\nBrake hardware differs by manufacturer, axle and chamber type. The documentation for the specific component says how to check it, what condition is acceptable, and how to service it. Use this page as a map of what to look at, not as a procedure.\n\n## Log the inspection in Blue Collar Parts\n\nThe technician can log the brake work in Blue Collar Parts and send the record to their customer, who confirms it. [Learn what Blue Collar Parts is](/kb/what-is-blue-collar-parts).\n\n---\n\n*A brake inspection during preventive maintenance is not a federal annual inspection and does not establish regulatory compliance. Use the equipment manufacturer’s current service documentation for equipment-specific maintenance requirements.*",
