"body": "**A service event is one visit to one piece of equipment.** It keeps the customer, the asset, and the work together, and it is private to your account until you send the record.\n\n## Start one\n\n1. Press **NEW SERVICE EVENT** from the dashboard, a customer, an asset, or the calendar, or go to [start a new service event](/customers?new=event).\n2. **Customer:** pick the customer, or add a new one.\n3. **Asset:** pick the asset, or add a new one.\n4. **Service details:** choose **Preventive maintenance** as the **Type of work**. See [record a PM service](/kb/record-a-pm-service).\n5. If the asset has no PM form of its own, such as a trailer, a **Maintenance form** choice appears. Pick the form you are working to.\n6. Add **Notes** if you want, and press **Start Service Event**.\n\nThe work opens immediately, ready to record.\n\n## Starting from a customer or an asset\n\nStarting from a customer's or an asset's page fills in the first steps for you. Starting from an asset is the fastest way to begin a repeat visit.\n\n## What happens to the service event next\n\nA service event moves from not started, to in progress, to complete, and then to sent when you send the record. Starting and completing work is free. See [service events and records](/kb/service-events-and-records) for how the pieces fit together.\n\n*Links into the app open your account.
