# How to Start a Service Event in Blue Collar Parts

**A service event is one visit to one piece of equipment.** It keeps the customer, the asset, and the work together, and it is private to your account until you send the record.

## Start one

1. Press **NEW SERVICE EVENT** from the dashboard, a customer, an asset, or the calendar, or go to [start a new service event](/customers?new=event).
2. **Customer:** pick the customer, or add a new one.
3. **Asset:** pick the asset, or add a new one.
4. **Service details:** choose **Preventive maintenance** as the **Type of work**. See [record a PM service](/kb/record-a-pm-service).
5. If the asset has no PM form of its own, such as a trailer, a **Maintenance form** choice appears. Pick the form you are working to.
6. Add **Notes** if you want, and press **Start Service Event**.

The work opens immediately, ready to record.

## Starting from a customer or an asset

Starting from a customer's or an asset's page fills in the first steps for you. Starting from an asset is the fastest way to begin a repeat visit.

## What happens to the service event next

A service event moves from not started, to in progress, to complete, and then to sent when you send the record. Starting and completing work is free. See [service events and records](/kb/service-events-and-records) for how the pieces fit together.
