"body": "The trailer ABS light is the lamp that tells you the trailer's antilock brake system (ABS) has detected a malfunction. When the trailer ABS light stays on, the system is reporting a fault. The lamp says that something is wrong. It does not say what.\n\n## What the rule says\n\n**49 CFR 393.55(e)** requires an exterior ABS malfunction indicator lamp on trailers. It applies to each trailer, including a trailer converter dolly, that is manufactured on or after the date the paragraph states and that is subject to paragraph (c)(2) of the same section. The lamp must meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 121, which the paragraph cites.\n\nRead the paragraph on eCFR for the exact dates and cross-references: [49 CFR 393.55](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-393.55).\n\nThis page describes what the rule requires. It does not tell you whether a particular trailer is covered by it.\n\n## When the trailer ABS light stays on\n\nOn many trailers the lamp comes on briefly when the trailer is powered and then goes out. That is the system checking itself. A trailer ABS light that stays on, or that comes back on while driving, means the system has detected a fault.\n\nA lit lamp usually points to one of these areas:\n\n- **Power and connection.** The trailer's ABS depends on a power supply through the connector between tractor and trailer. Corrosion, a damaged connector, a broken wire, or a poor ground can set the lamp.\n- **Wheel speed sensors.** A sensor that is damaged, dirty, misadjusted or disconnected can no longer report wheel speed.\n- **Sensor ring or hub area.** A damaged or contaminated tone ring gives the controller a bad signal.\n- **Modulator valve or controller.** These are the parts that act on the signals, and each can fail or lose its wiring.\n\nA useful first split is whether the lamp follows the trailer. If the same trailer shows the lamp behind a different tractor, the fault is likely on the trailer.\n\nThe ABS manufacturer's documentation says how to read the fault, for example through a diagnostic tool or a blink code, and what each fault means. Use it for the specific system on the trailer.\n\n## What the lamp does not tell you\n\nA lit lamp reports a fault in the antilock function. It does not by itself describe the condition of the rest of the brakes. A trailer can have a lit ABS lamp and also have a brake out of adjustment or an air leak, and each has to be checked on its own. See [slack adjuster adjustment](/kb/slack-adjuster-adjustment) and [brake chamber air leaks](/kb/brake-chamber-air-leaks), and the whole picture in [semi truck brake inspection](/kb/semi-truck-brake-inspection).\n\n## Log the repair in Blue Collar Parts\n\nThe technician can log the ABS diagnosis and repair in Blue Collar Parts and send the record to their customer, who confirms it. [Learn what Blue Collar Parts is](/kb/what-is-blue-collar-parts).\n\n---\n\n*This page summarizes 49 CFR 393.55(e) as read on the eCFR edition dated 2026-10-13.
