Cummins B6.7 Oil Capacity

Cummins B6.7 oil capacity is 16.7 L (17.6 qt) total with the standard pan and 19.7 L (20.8 qt) with the high-capacity pan, per Cummins' quick reference guide.

Published

Cummins gives two B6.7 oil capacities, one for each oil pan: 16.7 liters (17.6 qt) total system with the standard pan, and 19.7 liters (20.8 qt) total system with the high-capacity pan. Which pan an engine has is a build option. Confirm it on the engine before filling.

The figures and where they come from

Cummins' Quick Reference Guide: Truck maintenance and operation, B6.7 (Bulletin 5544259, Rev. 12/24), published at mart.cummins.com, states:

  • Standard pan: "Total system 16.7 liters (17.6 qt)", with "Pan only 14.2 liters (15 qt)".
  • High-capacity pan: "Total system 19.7 liters (20.8 qt)", with "Pan only 17.2 liters (18.5 qt)".

The guide also gives the difference between the high and low dipstick marks for each pan, and an oil filter capacity of 0.95 liters (1 qt). See the guide for the full specification list.

How often is the oil changed on a B6.7?

The guide sets the oil drain interval by oil pan and duty, as miles / hours / months:

  • 15 qt (standard) oil pan: 9,000 / 500 / 12 in severe duty, 15,000 / 500 / 12 in normal duty
  • 19 qt oil pan: 12,000 / 550 / 12 in severe duty, 20,000 / 550 / 12 in normal duty

The guide defines severe duty as under 7 mpg or 40% idle, and normal duty as over 7 mpg. It lists overhead adjustment at 150,000 miles / 5,000 hours / 48 months and gives no clearance value.

Confirm it for your engine

For full maintenance detail, the guide refers to the EPA 2017 B6.7 CM2350 Owner's Manual (Bulletin 5411225) and Operation and Maintenance Manual (Bulletin 5411224). Both are available through Cummins QuickServe or a Cummins dealer. Confirm the oil pan fitted, the capacity and the interval for the engine's serial number and build there.

What should the service record show?

A B6.7 oil service record should show:

  • which oil pan the engine has, since the capacity and the interval both depend on it;
  • the date and the mileage or hours;
  • the oil grade and the quantity added;
  • the filter part number;
  • the duty the interval was based on;
  • the condition of the oil and filter that came out.
