Volvo D13 and Mack MP8 Oil Capacity

Volvo gives the D13 oil capacity as 33 qt (31 L) and Mack gives the MP8 as 44 qt (42 L). The oil change volume depends on the pan and filters.

Published

Volvo's body builder instructions give the D13 oil capacity as 33 quarts (31 L), and Mack's give the MP7 and MP8 oil capacity as 44 quarts (42 L). Both documents also give a separate oil change volume, which depends on the oil pan and the number of full-flow filters on the truck. That is the figure to check against when changing the oil.

What is the Volvo D13 oil capacity?

Volvo's Body Builder Instructions, VNL, Section 1 (USA174188411, dated 5.2024), published at volvotrucks.us, gives the D13 "Oil Capacity in quarts" as "33 (31 L)".

For a D13 on a vehicle with two full-flow oil filters, the same section gives the oil change volume by pan:

  • steel or composite oil pan: 37 quarts (35 L);
  • aluminum oil pan: 38 quarts (36 L).

The document lists the oil held in the filters and the pan volume separately for each pan.

What is the Mack MP8 oil capacity?

Mack's Body Builder Instructions (USA189962715, dated 8.2025), published at macktrucks.com, gives the "Oil Capacity" for "MP7 and MP8" as "44 quarts (42 L)".

For an MP8 on a vehicle with three full-flow oil filters, it gives the oil change volume by pan:

  • steel oil pan: 39 quarts (37 L);
  • composite oil pan: 34.9 quarts (33 L);
  • aluminum oil pan: 40.2 quarts (38 L).

The document gives separate figures for a vehicle with two full-flow filters, and for a dry engine. Use the row that matches the truck.

Why the capacity and the oil change volume differ

Both documents state capacity and oil change volume as separate figures. The oil change volume is what the documents give for the pan and filter set-up on a given truck, so a technician needs to know which pan and how many full-flow filters the truck has before filling. Body builder instructions are written for truck builders. Confirm the figures against Volvo's or Mack's service documentation for the engine's serial number and build, or with a dealer.

What should the service record show?

A D13 or MP8 oil service record should show:

  • the oil pan material and the number of full-flow filters;
  • the date and the mileage or hours;
  • the oil grade and the quantity added;
  • the filter part numbers;
  • the condition of the oil and filters that came out.
