Detroit DD13 and DD15 Oil Capacity and Valve Adjustment

Detroit gives a 45 qt (43 L) service fill for the DD15 and 40 qt (38 L) for the DD13. Sources, DD15 oil change and valve lash intervals, and what to record.

Published

Detroit's technical specification sheets give a service fill (oil and filter change) of 45 qt (43 L) for the DD15 Gen 5 and 40 qt (38 L) for the DD13. The DD15 sheet also gives the valve lash adjustment interval by duty. It gives an interval, not a lash setting.

What is the DD15 oil capacity?

Detroit Diesel's DD15 Gen 5 Technical Specifications sheet (DDC-EMC-FLY-0121-1121), published through Daimler Truck North America, states "Service Fill (Oil & Filter Change) . . . 45 qt (43 L)".

The same sheet's maintenance table gives the engine oil and filter change interval by duty:

  • Severe Duty: 35,000 miles (56,000 km) or 750 hours
  • Short-Haul: 45,000 miles (72,000 km) or 1,000 hours
  • Long-Haul: 60,000 miles (97,000 km)
  • Efficient Long-Haul: 75,000 miles (121,000 km)

The sheet states that these intervals assume Detroit Fluids Specification 93K222 (CK-4) or 93K223 (FA-4) approved oils. A second footnote on the oil and filter change row says the intervals are "Recommended based on using Detroit's lube oil and oil analysis program." The sheet also defines each duty by annual mileage and fuel economy in its footnotes. Read those definitions on the sheet before choosing an interval.

When is DD15 valve lash adjusted?

The DD15 sheet lists valve lash adjustment as:

  • Severe Duty: "Adjust every 200,000" miles (322,000 km)
  • Short-Haul, Long-Haul and Efficient Long-Haul: "Adjust every 500,000" miles (800,000 km)

The sheet gives no clearance value. The settings and the adjustment procedure are in Detroit's service documentation for the engine.

What is the DD13 oil capacity?

Detroit Diesel's DD13 Technical Specifications sheet (2024), published by Freightliner Australia, states "Service Fill (Oil & Filter Change)... 40 qt. (38 L)". That sheet describes a DD13 for the Australian market, "designed specifically for intrastate local distribution and vocational applications". It is not a United States document. Confirm the figure for a DD13 in another market against Detroit's documentation for that engine.

Confirm it for your engine

Both figures come from specification sheets, not service manuals. Confirm the capacity, the interval and the valve settings for the engine's serial number and build against Detroit's service documentation, through Demand Detroit or a Detroit dealer.

What should the service record show?

A DD13 or DD15 oil service record should show:

  • the date and the mileage or hours;
  • the oil grade and specification, and the quantity added;
  • the filter part numbers;
  • the duty the interval was based on;
  • the condition of the oil and filter that came out.

A valve lash adjustment is its own line of work in the record, with the mileage at which it was done, because it runs on a different interval from the oil service.
